OBS Medical's Visensia® Validated as Valuable Rapid Response Trigger at International Symposium
Carmel, Indiana - At the 4th International Symposium on Rapid Response Systems and Medical Emergency Teams, Title Sponsor OBS Medical featured its expanded Visensia® predictive technology to improve patient safety throughout the hospital. Visensia was highlighted at the Symposium, in a special presentation by Professor Lionel Tarassenko of Oxford University and in a presentation by University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC).
Formerly known as BioSign™, Visensia fuses up to five vital signs - heart rate, respiration rate, body temperature, oxygen saturation and blood pressure - into a single numerical index, the Visensia Index. This Index is an indication of a patient's wellness and can be monitored and tracked throughout the hospital stay. The patented technology has been validated in clinical studies showing a high degree of sensitivity and specificity for identifying patient deterioration hours ahead of clinical crisis.
A well-known researcher in the field of signal interpretation (especially neural network, data fusion and ECG waveform analysis), Professor Tarassenko is a leader in healthcare technological innovations for safer hospitals, safer patients and safer drugs. With expertise in real-time data fusion, he spoke of the value of early warning of deterioration via multiple parameters and emphasized the predictive power of Visensia.
UPMC Presbyterian Hospital evaluated Visensia's ability to improve detection and shorten the duration of cardiorespiratory instability in patients on a stepdown unit. A winner, for her scientific poster titled "Impact of an Electronic Integrated Monitoring System upon the Incidence and Duration of Patient Instability on a Step Down Unit", Dr. Marilyn Hravnak presented the clinical results. The data showed proved an ability to improve detection of clinical instability and to increase the reliability of Rapid Response/Medical Emergency Team calls.
"We are excited by the positive results from the latest Visensia study,"says Frank Cheng, President and CEO of OBS Medical. "These data demonstrate a significant reduction in the number and duration of clinical crises enabled by Visensia and illustrates its ability to trigger timely calls to Rapid Response Teams."
In today's challenging healthcare environment, hospitals must maximize patient safety and optimize clinical resources. "The Visensia technology may be used as a resource management tool to ensure the optimal level of care is given to those who need it most,"says Cheng.
Leading hospitals are evaluating and using the flexible Visensia system in a variety of settings. Among them are UPMC, Trinity Health (Michigan), Clarian Health (Indiana), and John Radcliffe Hospital (UK).
